There’s a single MicroUSB connector on the back for power, and the top of the Healthy Home Coach is a touch sensitive panel for activating the LED light. Under that basic overview you get readings for each of the four measurements that the Healthy Home Coach monitors. Each tells you descriptively if the reading is good or not; tapping any reading brings up more detailed information. If you get a bad one, such as a room that’s too hot, the information box shows some tips on what you should do to combat the reading. Netatmo’s Healthy Home Coach has several sensors to detect the quality of your home environment.

The app takes care not to overwhelm you with data, and presents everything it has to say in a friendly, simple way. The main screen is split in two, with a color coded top panel giving you a quick glance summary of the air quality. The bottom half gives you exact data on the temperature, humidity, air quality, and sound levels. In the top right, there’s a rewind button that presents hourly data for the previous 24 hours of monitoring, so you can see what’s being going on overnight or in your absence. Since 2012, Netatmo has released 11 devices and accessories, including personal weather stations, smart thermostats, and connected security cameras.

A sound meter is something that I haven’t seen on an air monitor before. Netatmo says that it’s a useful metric, particularly in monitoring sleep quality. For example, by checking the historical data at night, you can see if there are regular loud noises that could be disturbing you and your family. At first glance, Netatmo Weather and Home Coach look very similar, except for the case color. The features are similar as well, but the purpose is slightly different.

Rivals include makers of air purifiers that also serve as air quality monitors, such asCoway’s Airmega,Uhoo, Molekule, and Sprimo. According to Netatmo, the advice takes your specific family into account. For instance, if you have a baby, you'll be told if you're keeping your home too cold for the well being of the child. And you can monitor noise levels and the rest of these measurements in real time and see their recorded history in Netatmo's iOS or Android app.

This release contains a fix for an issue that could prevent the product from being installed. You receive a tracking link to follow the delivery of your repaired product. The Healthy Home Coach is made of metal and plastic, so it should survive being knocked off a shelf, and it has excellent build quality. Provided the app is kept up to date, it should serve you well for many years to come. Netatmo has updated and improved its apps for other products, which bodes well for the future.

On the one hand, this is required for the setup of the Netatmo Weather/Home Coach devices, since due to the Android permissions structure, this is the only way to communicate via Bluetooth. According to the privacy policy, the location of the device is also transferred to Netatmo, for example, if the app crashes. The position of the weather station is determined even if the data is not shared with Netatmo Weathermap – the manufacturer should take further action here. If you live in an open-plan home, you may want one in the kitchen area and one in the living area to ensure accurate readings. We moved the Healthy Home Coach around the house, and into a large open-plan office; it operated with issue after around 30 minutes to adjust to its new situation. Will you have to decode stats, figures, and complicated chemical abbreviations to get the most from the Healthy Home Coach?

While the apps use standard protocols (TLS1.2), the communication of the Netatmo devices with the manufacturer’s cloud seems to use proprietary encryption. Even if the data transmitted in this case is not highly confidential, we would recommend encryption using standard protocols. Tap a measurement for an expanded view, but don’t expect to find graphs, long-term data, or anything overly complex. Simplicity is the aim here, and all you get is how your current data compares overall, on a little thermometer-style graphic. It’s perfectly understandable, and you really don’t need anything more.

Among other things, the CO2 concentration is used to display the air quality in the room. This is where the Netatmo Home Coach steps in and actively notifies about the current air quality. While we’re writing this, the Home Coach app says our environment is healthy, with a 23.7 degree centigrade temperature, 53 percent humidity, 36db of ambient sound, and 482ppm CO2. A window was open in the office, but it wasn’t very wide, which tripped up the Home Coach a bit soon after we plugged it in. Rather than just saying the air quality was poor, the app said we may feel drowsy, or find it hard to concentrate, and that opening a window would help. We opened the window wider, and sure enough, the air quality improved.

It’s also solidly made, the rose gold color is very fashionable at the moment, and it’s light enough to unplug and shift around the house — or into another one — at a moment’s notice. It’s the ideal gadget for people who don’t want to see or deal with technology in their home, but do want the benefits it brings. At the very least, I expect the Healthy Home Coach to take accurate readings -- the Urban Weather Station does. If the advice actually adds anything to the experience that a person with common sense couldn't figure out by looking at the readings, then the $100 price could be well worth it.

Ratings and reviews

Even though Netatmo Weather and Home Coach are very similar, two different apps are needed to access them. The Netatmo Weather app displays all data of the weather station, Netatmo Healthy Home Coach allows you to access the watcher of the indoor climate. Failing this, it would be great if data from multiple Netatmo devices was collated in a single app, and the results were all put into context with indications on how they affect each other. The Healthy Home Coach could be easily mistaken for Netatmo’s Welcomeindoor home security camera or its Weather Station. It’s an 8-inch high aluminum cylinder bookended by white plastic end caps, with a glowing LED light running down the center of the device. This indicates the status and gives you a quick hint at the air quality.

You plug it in, and everything else is done in the app, which at the moment is available only for iOS. With other Netatmo products we’ve tested, early versions of apps haven’t been great, and sometimes complicated to use. It’s straightforward and clear — and we’ve set the device up on a few different Wi-Fi networks and locations. Once added into your system, you can ask Siri simple questions, such as “What is the humidity in this room? ” Current Apple Home restrictions means that only the CO2 sensor can be used in automations.

These two options are some of the most critical for measuring what’s actually going on in your home. • The App displays advice to help you create a healthier environment. • The App‘s color-coded background makes it easy to see how healthy the room where you put your Healthy Home Coach is. VentureBeat's mission is to be a digital town square for technical decision-makers to gain knowledge about transformative enterprise technology and transact.

Even then, you can’t set a threshold, and Apple Home can only trigger an automation when high levels of carbon dioxide are detected. Monitoring your home’s air quality is big news at the moment, with a raft of products all launching at the same time. The cheapest product is the Netatmo Healthy Home Coach, which keeps the cost down by using fewer sensors. Hopefully, you'll also be able to use the Home Coach to set up triggers via Apple's HomeKit app, so a fan automatically turns on if the air quality dips below a certain point. That's something we'll look for when we test it for a full review. All data is kept for 24 hours, so you can step back in time to see what the measurements were like in the past.

Given that other Netatmo products have an IFTTT channel, this is bound to be added in the near future, but for now the Healthy Home Coach is less flexible than its competition. The graph could easily be improved just in terms of how it plots and labels the data. For example when I zoom so I can comfortably see the last two weeks and a bit, the graph only renders one data point per day. It could easily show for example 12 or at least 6 points per day, so it's possible to see how the value changes through the day, and whether it's different on the weekends. Also, in many cases there's only one label visible on the time axis, so the time scale is not apparent. • Connect as many devices as you want and monitor all your rooms using a single App.

This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. While this is helpful, the way it’s presented isn’t great, and could be clearer. Although it refers to the exact hour when it counts back, it uses the letter H as a suffix – H13, or H19, for example. This could be misinterpreted, and we suspect it’s to do with an original French language version .
